The Sidewinder Phenomenon
A Northampton event brand associated with UK Garage and MC culture

A Northampton name on the rave circuit
Sidewinder is remembered as an event brand rather than a radio station. It began around the turn of the millennium in Northampton, with early nights held at a venue called Pages, before growing into larger events that included Milton Keynes.
It belongs to a part of UK Garage history that is easy to overlook: the regional scene. London gets most of the credit for the genre's early years, but garage nights were also being built in towns and cities across the country, with local promoters, local crowds and local MCs.
Where it fits
By the end of the 1990s, UK Garage had moved well beyond its London beginnings. Speed garage and 2-step were being played in clubs nationwide, and nights like Sidewinder were part of how the music reached audiences outside the capital.
Garage was also a genre where the MC mattered. Hosting and crowd interaction were part of the night, and the MC-led style that developed around the music went on to shape later UK underground sounds.
The MCs
MC CKP is the name most often associated with Sidewinder in the Garage Tape Packs archive. We have not been able to confirm a full line-up history for the nights, so this article does not attempt one.
What the archive can and cannot say
Garage Tape Packs holds recordings and material connected to the era, and Sidewinder is part of that record. Detailed facts about individual events, such as exact dates, line-ups and attendances, are not something we can verify from the archive alone, and we would rather leave them out than guess.
If you were there, or have flyers, tapes or recordings from Sidewinder nights, the archive would like to hear from you.
Why it matters
Sidewinder is a reminder that UK Garage was never only a London story. Regional promoters, venues and MCs built their own scenes around the sound, and tape packs and recordings are often the only surviving trace of those nights.
