The Journey Behind Garage Tape Packs

Craig has been DJing for 23 years after getting his first pair of turntables for his 16th birthday. Starting with Drum & Bass and evolving through Garage, Grime, Speed Garage, Electro, and Funky House, Craig's journey is rooted in Birmingham's rich sound system culture and his father's reggae blues parties.

Early Years & First Decks

Craig started out playing solely Drum & Bass after his cousin gifted him his vinyl collection, recognizing his enthusiasm and talent. He began making mixtapes for friends at school and soon progressed to playing at various parties, local events, and youth clubs.

At age 16, Craig got his first pair of turntables for his birthday—a moment that would define the next two decades of his life. He quickly gained a small following, and shortly after, he was playing professionally.

First Professional Gigs

Craig's first club booking came at Club Radius in Birmingham at a Drum & Bass event named Home Grown, run by Mistress Mo. This marked the beginning of his professional career, which has now spanned 19 years behind the decks.

From youth clubs to professional venues, Craig's dedication and natural talent opened doors throughout Birmingham's underground scene.

Discovering UK Garage

Craig found his love for Garage after hearing a Heartless Crew mixtape. He soon started buying various tape packs such as Sun City and Garage Nation, immersing himself in the sound that would become central to his musical identity.

While at college, Craig got into the fresh Grime scene that was evolving through the likes of Roll Deep Crew and Pay As You Go. At the same time, he discovered his love for Speed Garage after going to clubs in Birmingham such as Moon Lounge and The Steering Wheel. This was the direction Craig went.

Genre Evolution

Craig went on to play at a few local clubs in Birmingham such as GR Bar, Radius, and Angels Bar, playing Electro and Funky House—other genres he discovered and fell in love with. His versatility and ability to adapt to different sounds made him a sought-after DJ across Birmingham's diverse club scene.

His willingness to explore different genres while maintaining his underground roots has been a hallmark of his career.

Festival Success

Craig played at Crooked House Festival alongside massive names such as Low Steppa and Darius Syrossian after winning a DJ competition. This achievement validated years of hard work and dedication to his craft.

He has also played at various events such as Rewind UKG, Birmingham Pride, House Addicts, and Moon Rave, bringing his unique energy to crowds across the UK.

Musical Heritage

Craig got into music from a very early age. His father used to host reggae blues parties and was heavily involved in the 80s sound system culture in Birmingham, organizing events for Stereo Classic and Love Injection.

Craig would be woken up to deep thundering reggae dub basslines and come downstairs to a full-blown rave in his house. This early exposure to sound system culture and the power of bass music shaped his entire approach to DJing and music selection.

First Musical Memory

Craig first got into Drum & Bass after his mother brought him Mbeat's 'Incredible' on vinyl. That record opened his ears to the power of breakbeats and bass, setting him on the path that would define his life.

From that moment, music became more than just a hobby—it became a passion, a lifestyle, and eventually a career.

The Present

With 23 years of experience and a deep knowledge of multiple genres, Craig continues to bring energy and authenticity to every set. His journey from a 16-year-old with his first turntables to a respected name in Birmingham's underground scene is a testament to dedication, passion, and love for the music.

Whether playing Drum & Bass, UK Garage, Speed Garage, or Funky House, Craig's sets are always rooted in the sound system culture that raised him and the underground spirit that drives him.
