From 1987 Warehouse Raves to Chart-Topping Productions - A 30+ Year Journey Through UK Underground
The Journey of Jon Fernandez
From his first warehouse rave in 1987 to becoming a chart-topping producer and respected DJ, Jon Fernandez has been at the forefront of the UK Garage and Soulful House scene for over three decades.
The Beginning: Raving & Early Influences
Jon Fernandez's journey into electronic music began at school when a friend (DJ SLANGE) taught him how to DJ. His first record purchase was Electro Crucial, marking the start of a lifelong passion. Around 1987, a pal's older brother introduced him to the rave scene, where they'd meet at places like Scratchwood Services to follow convoys of cars to fields or warehouses for legendary underground parties.
The same friend told him about DJ HYPE, calling him "the best on the scene" - something Jon agrees with to this day. DJ Hype's mixing, along with Loftgroover, became his main influences as a young DJ, shaping his technical approach and musical sensibility.
First Productions & The Hardcore Era
As Jon progressed into studio work, he released his first track in 1992 - a hardcore track called "Mystery 159" that used a Madonna sample. From there, he made numerous hardcore jungle tracks before moving into the early house and garage scene around 1995.
His first break came from Paul K at his night called "A ONE NIGHT STAND" at Middlesex and Herts Country Club. This led to regular slots at legendary clubs including Gass, Bagleys, Chunnel, Ministry, Bar Rumba, and Colosseum.
THE GARAGE EXPERIENCE Era
Jon became a resident for THE GARAGE EXPERIENCE, then took over the promotion with Dave Talbot until Stuart Mitchell joined them with the promoting after being a resident DJ from the early days. They had weekly guests like Karl, Matt, Booker T, and EZ.
This period solidified Jon's reputation in the UK Garage scene, playing alongside the biggest names and helping to shape the sound that would define a generation.
Tenerife Years & Production Evolution
Jon moved to and from Tenerife for many years, playing resident for ESCAPE, Rooftops, RAH RAHS, and BOBBYS BAR. During this time, he started producing a range of garage tracks, influenced by TUFF JAM, MJ COLE, and TODD EDWARDS, getting some of his tracks played on the Tuff Jam show on Kiss FM.
The international experience broadened his musical palette and production techniques, blending the UK underground sound with international influences.
Soulful House Success & Chart Domination
In more recent years, Jon has written songs, produced, and remixed tracks in the soulful house genre with big influences from MAW (Masters At Work). Most tracks are out on the HSR Records label, including a No.1 hit with "YOU GOT ME FEELING FREE" and a No.2 with "I CAN LOVE," along with many more top 20s like "I JUST CANT STOP LOVING YOU."
He was honored to remix a track by chart singer Chanelle called "RUNNING" on the DEEP NOTA record label, showcasing his versatility and production prowess.
Return to Garage & Current Work
More recently, Jon has released garage tracks on Pointblank Records, including remixes of "TINGLES," "MASQUERADE," and "LOVE COME DOWN." His production work continues to push boundaries while staying true to the underground garage sound that defined his career.
From 1987 warehouse raves to chart-topping productions, Jon Fernandez remains a vital force in the UK underground scene.
