The Journey Behind Garage Tape Packs

My musical journey started in the 1980s running a reggae sound system 'UNITY FONDATION' in Harlesden London NW10 with my cousins Rob and Ian. Playing in local bars and clubs we lived and breathed the cultural vibe for many years and frequented all the main sound systems JAH SHAKA, COXSON, STEREOGRAPH, CHANNLE ONE and many more.

TOO CRAZZY to be a roadie

In 1986 by sheer luck, I managed to get a Job with a production company as an assistant sound engineer for the band Queen, Status quo and Big Country at Knebworth park, the contract was for a full tour, but like most things as a young guy I was, shall we say, excessive with recreational substances. Opp's things to come.

PIRATES and RAVES

In following years, I moved away from London and back to Hertfordshire were my good friend Jimmy Ryan from ruff cut records lived. We hang out allot in his studio and this is where I first found my love for mixing and production. The music industry at that time was eager for new sounds and just like that, THE RAVE seen jumped into action. Illegal events went ballistic and we were smack BANG in the middle of it and we thought oi oi BRING IT ON and here we go.

LET the GOOD TIMES roll

I can't remember how I started DJ-ING? infect most of the 90s were a complete blur but somewhere along the way I started UNITY that became IMPACT FM that ran on and off from around 92 up till 2001, In the early to mid-90s is where I met Geoff BIG DRUM, Nigel THE MENACE, Andy Hurst and Nick Greed who where a permanent fixture of the Radio station and later Geoff become my partner in crime along with all the highs and lows that followed.

Things grow and I found myself Djing back in London clubs where I was privileged to witness the birth of House and Garage music, with my good Friend Victor Osime and the legendary Timmy Ram Jam the godfather of UK House and Garage club seen.

Sunday Gass Club was the place to be along with Frog and Nightgown, Old Kent Road, Mum's The Word. Sunday afternoon Boat Club, theses were wild times. Timmys Happy Days grow and in late 90s opened the Aquarium Club.

CRASH and BURN

As they say, all good things come to an end, not everything was sunshine and lollypops after years of complete decadence things began to go downhill, there are of Couse twists and turns to the story but you can get the picture? My friend Victor and family moved away to South Africa and months later Victor died in a car crash; things relay got out of control after that, HMP was looming, the walls closed in and the dark times began along with some Selfe reflection.

ONWARDS and UPWARDS

So, this is where the story takes an unusual turn, I moved away from the music seen and dove back into construction and house refurbishment business, although this was a hard slog things began to change and life wasn't that gloomy, I kept in contact with only a hand fool of People 'Andy and Nigel, I still love those guys' Geoff Big Drum also being one of them and although we personally had some ups and downs I always felt that he was one person I couldn't let go of as a friend, and believe me when I say, the list of useless Fucks I had previously gathered around me were many and brushing them off was essential.

WELCOME to FANTASY Island

So how did I end up on a sub-tropical Island between the mainland of Japan and Okinawa? Simple, I stated marathon running and met a super nice Japanese lady and years later in 2018 we got matted. I sold my refurbishment business, we pooled our resources and said farewell to the UK in June 2019.

After designing and building our house with all the creature comforts, that Music monkey on my back began to start whispering to me again, and I decided refresh my love for music, I remembered Jimmy Ryon, Impact FM and Geoff, so I am back with my own Mastering and production Studio here on Amami Oshima. Keeping in contact with Geoff also give me the opportunity to DJ again on his YouTube Channel, Garage Tape Packs and Yes, there is so much more to this story and all I can say with confidence is, say away from the Vampires and keep your good friends close and people you love closer. And if by chance you find yourself in my neck of the woods pop in and say hello, oi oi. NOT THE END.
