From Polygram Records to International Stages - A Journey Through Underground Garage & House
The Journey of Chris Bass
From his early days at Polygram Records in 1982 to becoming a respected producer and label boss, Chris Bass has been at the forefront of the underground Garage and House scene for over four decades.
The Beginning: Soul, Funk & Electro
In 1982, Chris was immersed in the vibrant sounds of Soul, Jazz Funk, and Electro that dominated London's pirate radio stations. This passion led him to his first job at Polygram Records on Bond Street, where he was surrounded by the music that would shape his future.
It was the Electro music from the US and its transformation into hip hop that truly caught his attention and gave him the DJing bug. Armed with determination and creativity, he learned to mix using tape pause buttons, an MRT 60 mixer, and two belt-driven turntables—humble beginnings that laid the foundation for a legendary career.
Acid House & The Rave Revolution
As the Acid House scene exploded, Chris dove headfirst into radio, spinning Detroit Techno, early Hardcore Breaks, and Garage/House. By the late Eighties, he'd upgraded to the iconic Technics 1210s and was raving and DJing at private parties and warehouse events across South London's concrete jungles.
In 1989, a pivotal introduction to Nicky Traxx opened doors to the legendary Confusion nights on Shaftesbury Avenue. What started as a warm-up set evolved into a residency at Melange off Carnaby Street, where Chris played alongside scene legends KCC and LTJ Bukem.
Going International: Sweden & Wales
1991 marked Chris's first international gig in Sweden, supporting local band "Stone Funkers" and playing clubs, warehouse parties, and sets on ClubFM radio. The international scene had embraced his sound.
In 1995, Chris relocated to Swansea, Wales, to help run, promote, and DJ at the city's premier Garage club "The G Spot" after connecting with the RELEASE THE PRESSURE UK & US DJs. He also secured a residency at Wales' only superclub "Escape," where he commanded the second main Garage room, introducing his signature style of uplifting US and UK Garage alongside his favorite guest DJs and producers.
Producer & Label Boss
Chris turned his skills to music production, teaching himself and drawing inspiration from early MAW, 95 North, Todd Edwards, Eddie Perez, Todd Terry, and Mood II Swing. His remix work includes tracks for Vula, Barbara Tucker, Robbie Craig, Janet Rushmore, and Kathy Wood, collaborating with industry heavyweights like Danny Foster, Karl "Tuff Enuff" Brown, and Booker T.
Alongside Ray Hurley, Chris established Sub London Records, an underground label releasing deep house and garage grooves that gained massive support from HouseFM, Rinse, Vision, and Urban Dubz, building a loyal following among DJs in the genre.
His own label, Rollin Beats, launched in 2018, has seen remarkable success. Releases have been featured on Pure Garage/House CDs compiled by DJ Fen, and he's been approached by major labels for remixes and collaborations. The label receives strong support from legendary club DJs including Todd Edwards, Ray Hurley, Matt Jam Lamont, DJ Fen, Norris Da Boss Windross, and Jeremy Sylvester.
Lockdown Revival & The Future
Lockdown 2020 saw Chris return to the studio with renewed passion and a fresh outlook on creating beats and grooves. With longtime DJ and producer friend Danny Foster, he founded Hustlers Social Club—a new production and remix brand for an ever-growing scene.
